Pradosha Moorthi – History & Significance

Pradosha Moorthi is a sacred form of Lord Shiva, worshipped especially during the holy time called Pradosham, which occurs twice every lunar month.

 Mythological History of Pradosha Moorthi

The origin of Pradosha Moorthi comes from the famous story of the churning of the cosmic ocean (Samudra Manthan).

 The Samudra Manthan Story

According to Hindu scriptures:

  • The Devas (gods) and Asuras (demons) churned the ocean to obtain Amrita (nectar of immortality).

  • During this process, a deadly poison called Halahala emerged.

  • The poison threatened to destroy all creation.

To save the universe:

  • Lord Shiva compassionately drank the poison.

  • His consort Parvati held His throat to stop the poison from spreading.

  • The poison remained in His throat, turning it blue — giving Him the name Neelakantha.
