Mariamman – History and Origin

Mariamman is one of the most important folk goddesses worshipped in South India, especially in Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and parts of Sri Lanka. She is widely known as the Goddess of Rain, Health, and Protection from Diseases.

 Meaning of the Name

• “Mari” in Tamil means rain and also change or transformation.

• “Amman” means mother goddess.

So, Mariamman means “Mother who brings rain and protects life.”

 Historical Background

Mariamman worship dates back over 2,000 years, originating from ancient Dravidian village traditions, even before organized temple Hinduism developed.

Early Folk Worship

• Villagers worshipped Mariamman as a local protective deity.

• She was believed to control:

  • Rainfall

  • Fertility of land

  • Epidemics like smallpox, chickenpox, and fevers.

• Before modern medicine, people prayed to her for healing during disease outbreaks.
